Subscribing to Photoshop

I finally bit that little bullet that had been nagging away at the back of my brain for weeks. It was inevitable, really. I felt there was no point trying to develop photography skills with a camera and kit that cost me the best part of £500 if i wasn’t going to bother learning photo editing.

I’d done a bit with free packages. I’ve been a casual user of Paint.Net for years but downloaded a free Nikon package called NX-D to start working with RAW/NEF files. Realising the limits of both, I decided to start using GIMP. That was touted as a great alternative to Photoshop although as I quickly found, that can’t handle RAW/NEF files either. Plus, as my photography course is now coming to the end, I want to be able to practice the skills I’m learning in the night class.

I purchased the subscription today and already feel my editing skills are improving. It also means I can work through emails with free tips I get every so often from FStoppers on how to do this and that in Lightroom (a streamlined version of Photoshop with photography in mind). I’ve already learnt that landscape photography is an unforgiving beast in the wrong conditions and I want to learn to turn “meh” photos into something with a bit more zing.

When my partner found out I’d subscribed to Photoshop she said “ah good, I can use you as my guinea pig to improve my illustration editing”. She’s recently re-found her art mojo and using the same version of Photoshop she was using when she was a student.

Another reason I wanted to use Photoshop is something called Smart Objects, not presently available on any other package. I sell photographic products through Red Bubble, and the site has made some templates available for promotional purposes for t-shirts, mugs etc. It’ll help me promote stuff a bit more and more striking promotional posts with it.
