Useful Site For Writers: FontZone

Perhaps not so much for writers as budding cover designers, or those who want to try to design their own covers before asking someone to do it for them. The provided fonts that come with Windows and the extras that come with MS Office are nice, functional and there is a healthy mix of artistic and those suitable for formal writing.

Arial, Times New Roman and my personal favourite Calibri work well, but let’s be honest, they don’t really cut it do they? You want your poster design or book cover to really stand out and even the best image in the world can be badly let down by a crappy font.

Thankfully, there are hundreds of sites out there providing free or paid-for fonts that you can use commercially without having to pay royalties. My personal favourite before was Font Squirrel, which I used for the original cover of The Weight of Reason, but in installing lots of new software on my new laptop and getting back some of the great fonts I installed on my old machine, I found Font Zone. There are more options than on Font Squirrel which seems to have lost many of its old fonts. Whether you want something elegant or functional, with a horror theme, something for a romance cover or a bit thriller, there are many to choose from.

Who knew there was such a large community willing and able to design fonts for every occasion?

I love House of Horror, it’s comicky, a bit reminiscent of Hammer Horror and should I ever choose to redesign the cover for Dead Heat, it may make a good font to use.

    1. Welcome 🙂 It’s a great site and it’s a shame the other one I mentioned has scaled back. There were some great fonts on there.
