Websites for writers: Powerthesaurus

What happens when you know what you want to say but the right word doesn’t come to mind? You need a thesaurus. There are many out there, a lot of glittery and some don’t stand up to quality checks. Basically – they have style but little substance.

A couple of weeks ago I was sent this useful little tool by somebody who stumbled upon my blog. Power Thesaurus might not look like much (and graphically it is very simple) but enter a word and you are presented with, actually, quite a lot of information.

Each result presents an easy to use table and easily clickable tabs for antonyms, synonyms, meaning in broader and narrower context. You can also select whether you are looking for the verb or noun (when the word can be either). You can also choose words that sound similar. So many clickable options that you’ll be surprised how useful such sites can be when so many others look pretty but don’t really deliver.

This is a great little tool for the word geek or for when you can’t quite explain what you actually mean.

  1. Thanks for sharing! This is a great addition to the Emotional Thesaurus, a tool to use for describing/expanding emotional descriptions, that I just ordered. 😀

    1. Ooh, not heard of that one. I will check it out!

  2. Something wrong with the power thesaurus link… did you forget the http://?

    1. Corrected, thank you. It’s strange because the website itself omits the http://, which means that the copied link appeared broken.

      1. It was the bane of my web developer days… well that and Word smart quotes not being properly encoded in Content Management Systems. 🙂
